The Government's latest initiative to give businesses the opportunity to defer the recent 5% business rate increase has met with a lukewarm response and we expect it will have little impact. Reducing taxation on empty space would have been a much better strategy, many property owners and developers are still facing the decision of knocking down empty buildings to avoid these crippling costs.
