2010-08-11 : Councils Owed Millions in Uncollected Business Rates and Council Tax
Millions of pounds in council tax and business rates have been uncollected by several councils across the UK. Analysis by public services union GMB has revealed large sums of non domestic rates were uncollected during the financial year 2009/2010.
The seven district councils in Leicestershire failed to collect a total of £8 million between them, while across the capital, all 33 councils combined failed to collect £247 million in council tax and business rates.
The GMB have said the level of uncollected taxes cannot be accepted at a time when there are deficits in the public finances, which are giving rise to cuts in public services and job losses at a time of already high unemployment.
Councils have replied saying the money has not been written off and would be continue to be collected beyond the end of the financial year.
