2010-10-08 : Relief at Small Business Rates 'holiday'
Small business owners nationwide are benefitting from the changes in business rate relief, which began on Friday 1st October. Most companies have seen their bills reduce substantially, while others have had 100% relief for the twelve month period.
From this month, eligible business owners with properties of a rateable value up to £6,000 will pay no rates. Properties with rateable values between £6,001 and £12,000 will have relief on a sliding scale.
It is hoped this change in relief will encourage new small businesses to set up, as well as drive down overheads for existing owners in the current climate.
But some firms are still unaware that they qualify for the relief. Although councils have written to thousands of businesses, some claim not to have received any information. To avoid this, the Government are looking into ways of automating the application for small business rate relief.
