2010-10-25 : Town charities to lose discretionary relief
Swindon Council have revealed they will be withdrawing part of the discount they give to national charities. The decision was taken at a council cabinet meeting to stop the 20% discretionary business rates discount allowed for charity shops in the town.
The new rules apply to approximately 26 organisations, meaning many charities find themselves in the uncommon position of having to pay business rates for the first time in years.
All charities are automatically given 80% discount on business rates, with the extra discretionary 20% from councils leaving them with nothing to pay. As charities strive to keep costs to a minimum, they feel the increased costs will affect their fundraising.
The decision to remove the discretionary relief was taken by the council due to budget pressures. Swindon Council said they will still remain more generous than other councils as the 20% discount will still apply for local charities, which some neighbouring authorities do not give at all.
